Why is a drink spill different from fresh water?
Milk, coffee, tea, soda, juice and mixed drinks contain material that does not evaporate with the water. Sugar, proteins, fats, acids and colorants can remain around a grille or component.
A low-frequency sequence can move a droplet. It cannot dissolve dried residue, disinfect the cavity or reverse corrosion. That distinction should guide every next step.
What should you do immediately?
Disconnect cables and accessories, remove the case and wipe the exterior with a soft, lint-free cloth. Keep the connector downward and move the phone to a dry area with airflow. Do not charge it while wet.
Apple’s wet-iPhone guidance says that supported models exposed to a liquid other than water can have the affected exterior area rinsed with tap water and wiped. Follow the current instructions for your device rather than adding soap or solvents.
Can you run Water Eject?
If the phone otherwise works and the speaker or earpiece still produces sound, one controlled sequence may help move liquid. Point the affected opening downward, use a comfortable volume and wipe away what reaches the exterior.
Do not interpret expelled droplets as complete cleaning. Repeating the tone cannot remove what is dissolved in the drink. Stop if distortion worsens or the output becomes silent.
What should you avoid?
Do not pour alcohol, disinfectant or water into the grille. Do not insert swabs, tissue or pins. Avoid heat, compressed air and rice. Do not scrub a wet receiver with a brush.
Once the phone is dry, inspect the opening. Apple allows a small, clean, dry, soft-bristled brush when speaker or receiver cleaning is necessary, but material behind the grille may require service.
Why can sound improve and remain distorted?
Moving the bulk liquid can restore some diaphragm movement while a thin residue continues to alter the opening or component. This partial improvement is expected evidence of two different problems, not a reason to keep increasing volume.
Record whether calls, music or speakerphone are affected. Milk in the top receiver, for example, needs different output testing from a drink across the bottom loudspeaker.
When should you seek service?
Seek evaluation for persistent distortion after drying, sticky or visibly blocked openings, no sound, charging problems, heat, shutdowns, display changes or any symptom that spreads beyond one audio output.
Tell the service provider exactly which drink was involved. “Liquid exposure” is less useful than knowing it contained salt, sugar, milk or another contaminant.
Questions about a drink spilled on an iPhone speaker
Can Water Eject remove milk from an earpiece?+
It may move some liquid, but it cannot remove milk solids, fat or dried residue. Persistent distortion needs cleaning guidance or service.
Should I rinse the affected area?+
Apple says supported iPhones exposed to a liquid other than water can have the affected exterior area rinsed with tap water, then wiped. Follow current instructions for your exact model.
Can I use alcohol or cleaner in the speaker grille?+
Do not pour or spray cleaning products into an opening. Follow Apple’s approved exterior-cleaning method and keep moisture out of the grille and connector.
Why does the speaker remain sticky or distorted after drying?+
Water can evaporate while sugar, protein, oil or other residue remains around the grille or diaphragm. Sound does not dissolve or extract that material.
