Verify the playback destination

Start familiar audio and open Control Center. Return the destination to the iPhone, disconnect Bluetooth and AirPlay targets and remove wired accessories. Raise media volume during active playback.

A sound routed to another device can make the built-in speaker appear dead even when it is not.

Test each built-in output

Try music, speakerphone and a normal call at your ear. The bottom loudspeaker and top receiver are separate. One may remain functional while the other is silent.

If only calls are silent, focus on the receiver. If media and speakerphone fail, focus on the loudspeaker path. If both fail, broaden the system and hardware checks.

Follow the wet-device response

Disconnect cables, remove the case and wipe the exterior. Keep the relevant opening and connector downward and leave the phone in a dry area with airflow. Do not charge while wet.

Avoid rice, heat, compressed air and objects in the connector. Follow Apple’s wet-iPhone guidance.

Why can’t Water Eject solve silence?

The sound effect works by moving a speaker diaphragm. If the component produces no audio, the app cannot confirm that its signal is being reproduced. Haptics are not a replacement for the missing speaker output.

Do not repeatedly increase volume or change frequency to force a silent component.

What should you inspect once dry?

Remove cases and films, inspect the grille for blockage and follow Apple’s approved dry-brush method if necessary. Check Silent mode, Focus and the Sounds slider.

Apple says a dimmed speaker button or no sound during its checks can indicate the need for service.

Which symptoms make service more urgent?

Seek evaluation for persistent silence, severe distortion from the other output, charging failure, repeated liquid alerts, unusual heat, shutdowns, display changes or camera fogging. Record the exposure and which outputs failed.

Document the failure before service

Write down the liquid involved, approximate exposure time, whether the phone was submerged and which actions you already tried. Note separately whether ringtones, media, speakerphone and calls at the ear produce sound. A short screen recording can document settings, although it cannot capture a failed physical speaker accurately when played elsewhere. This record helps distinguish an audio-route setting from one failed component and prevents repeated high-volume tests. Back up the iPhone if it operates normally enough to do so without connecting a wet cable.

Frequently asked

Questions about no speaker sound after water

Can vibration eject water when the speaker is silent?+

Vibration may disturb droplets, but Water Eject’s intended speaker effect requires audible diaphragm movement. Silence needs routing, drying and service checks.

Could audio be playing through Bluetooth?+

Yes. Inspect the playback destination in Control Center and disconnect accessories before concluding that the speaker failed.

Should I keep trying louder tones?+

No. If ordinary sound is absent, louder playback commands do not prove the component is moving and can delay the correct diagnosis.

When does silence require service?+

Persistent silence after routing, settings, drying and blockage checks—especially with charging, heat, power or display symptoms—deserves service evaluation.
