What does water resistant mean?
Apple lists supported iPhone models with IP ratings achieved under controlled laboratory conditions. These ratings describe tested resistance to water and dust; they are not a promise for every depth, duration, liquid or device condition.
Real incidents include movement, impact, worn seals, temperature changes and contaminants not captured by a simple label.
Why isn’t “waterproof” the right word?
Waterproof suggests a permanent barrier that cannot fail. Apple states that splash, water and dust resistance are not permanent and can decrease with normal wear.
A dropped, repaired or aging phone may not behave like a new laboratory sample. Liquid damage is also treated separately from the resistance claim.
Why can a resistant phone sound muffled?
Water can sit near the microphone or speaker opening and temporarily degrade performance until it evaporates. The phone may remain on while an audio cavity is still wet.
Place the affected speaker downward on a lint-free cloth and allow airflow. A controlled sequence may help move droplets.
What should you do after an accident?
Disconnect cables, remove the case, wipe the exterior and hold the connector downward. Do not charge until dry. Avoid heat, compressed air, rice and objects in the port.

How do contaminants change the risk?
Ocean water, pool water, drinks and soap can leave residue after water evaporates. Apple provides specific exterior guidance for liquids other than water on supported models.
A water-resistance rating does not make residue removable with sound or eliminate corrosion risk.
What should Water Eject users assume?
Assume only that a controlled sound may help a functioning wet audio cavity. Do not assume the rating or clearer sound proves internal dryness, restored seals or safe charging.
Seek service for persistent audio distortion or any charging, heat, display, power or camera symptom.
Treat the rating as a design limit
An ingress rating is measured under specified laboratory conditions; it is not a promise for every fall, seal age, liquid type or repair history. Everyday wear can reduce resistance, and soaps, salt, chlorine and sugary drinks behave differently from fresh water. This is why a phone can survive an incident yet still have a temporarily muffled speaker—or develop a later problem. Respond to the actual exposure and symptoms. Do not repeat the incident intentionally, and do not use a past survival as evidence that the next one is safe.
