Why cleaning is a different signal, not a different pitch

Water ejection has one job: push a droplet in one direction, at the frequency where the diaphragm moves furthest. Dust is a different problem. Lint sits in the mesh and in the cavity, it comes in many sizes, and pushing steadily at one frequency does very little to it.

So the cleaning sequence agitates instead:

  • Shaker bursts — a 165 Hz and then 220 Hz tone with the volume wobbling 14–16 times a second, which rattles the diaphragm rather than driving it smoothly.
  • Zigzag chirps — fast sweeps up and down across 150–600 Hz and then 200–900 Hz. Each leg re-hits both ends of the band, so it excites many resonances instead of gliding past them once.
  • A click train — 300 Hz and 450 Hz bursts only 0.12 seconds long, acting as a rapid series of impulse knocks.
  • Rising sweeps to 1 kHz — the stage that actually carries loosened fine dust toward the opening.
  • A closing shaker pass, so anything freed at the end still has a chance to drop out.

That is about 46 seconds in total, and the order matters: loosen first, transport last.

What sound cannot shift

Sound moves loose particles. It does nothing to anything sticky or compacted. If the grille has absorbed skin oil, hand cream, sunscreen or a spilled drink, the debris is bonded to the mesh and vibration will not release it.

It also cannot clean a speaker whose mesh is packed solid — the point where the sound is not dull but nearly gone. At that stage the mesh needs physical cleaning, and possibly a repair shop.

A dull speaker that improves slightly after cleaning and then dulls again over weeks is usually pocket lint accumulating. That is normal and worth repeating occasionally.

How to help it mechanically, safely

The tone works better when you give the freed dust somewhere to go. After the sequence, brush the grille with a soft, clean, completely dry brush — a new toothbrush is ideal — using light strokes along the grille, not into it.

What not to do:

  • No needles, pins, paper clips or SIM tools. The mesh is thin and the driver is right behind it.
  • No compressed air. It drives debris inward and can damage the diaphragm.
  • No liquid cleaner, alcohol or water. You are trying to remove dust, not create mud.
  • No vacuum nozzle pressed against the grille.

Wet or dusty? They need opposite treatment

If you are not sure which problem you have, the timing tells you. Sound that changed suddenly, right after contact with liquid, is water. Sound that has been getting gradually duller over months is dust.

Run the water tone first if there is any chance liquid is involved, and let the phone dry before cleaning. Agitating a wet speaker just moves water around inside the cavity, and running a cleaning sequence through a wet mesh can push damp lint deeper.

This sequence is the loudest one here

The cleaning sequence spends more time in the upper part of the range than the water tone does, and the click-train stage is deliberately abrupt. It stops at 1 kHz like everything else on this site, but it is the sequence most likely to be uncomfortable at close range.

Keep it away from your ears, and away from a baby, a pet or anyone sleeping nearby. If you need to check whether it is working, listen from a normal distance rather than holding the phone up.

Questions about the dust cleaning tone

Is this the same as the water eject sound?+

No. Water ejection pushes at a single resonance to move a droplet. Cleaning wobbles, chirps and knocks across a wider band to shake loose particles free, then sweeps upward to carry them out. Using one for the other's job mostly wastes your time.

How often should I run it?+

Once every few weeks is plenty for ordinary pocket lint. Running it daily will not keep the speaker cleaner; dust accumulates at the speed it accumulates.

My speaker is quieter after cleaning. What happened?+

Usually the debris moved rather than left, and it is now sitting somewhere less convenient. Brush the grille and run the sequence once more with the phone facing down. If it stays worse, stop and have the mesh looked at.

Can I run this with the case on?+

You can, but it works less well. Case lips sit right over the grille and catch the lint on its way out, which is often where it came from in the first place.
